AltaMed partners with Reach Out and Read, a national nonprofit school-readiness organization, to encourage parents and families to read to their children. The program addresses literacy development in children (ages 0-5) from low-income families by providing books to pediatric patients during routine health checkups.
Many of the families that Reach Out and Read serves do not have any books at home. By giving children a new developmentally-appropriate book to take home with them, they are able to acquire the basic language skills they will need to succeed throughout their school years.
AltaMed distributes roughly 1,800 books a month.
Language development is increased in participating children by three to six months.
