A legacy of community impact and change

Initially established in 1969 as a free clinic, 50+ years (and 55 sites later), AltaMed continues to be there for its community, regardless of coverage, status or ability to pay.

Why was AltaMed founded?

Expanding access to care

Thanks in part to our generous supporters we were able to complete over 1 million patient visits last year to those who often have nowhere else to turn. But there are still challenges to overcome.

The scope of our work not only includes providing quality care, but developing our community by providing workforce pipelines, support for higher education, and advocacy around health care policy and voter rights.

Removing Health Care Barriers

AltaMed understands that health care goes far beyond the medical office. As a trusted voice in the community – they’re proactively addressing the social determinants of health, so they can tackle factors that affect the health of their service areas.

From wellness courses, promoting active lifestyles at their community events to preparing youth for college and providing them workforce pipelines – AltaMed is helping improve outcomes for every family member in the communities they serve.

What are some Healthcare Barriers?

Rooted in Activism

In 1969, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, a group of Brown Berets in East Los Angeles were inspired to take action and build a free clinic that would enable their community to access appropriate, affordable health care in the right language.

While AltaMed has expanded well beyond the walls of that initial clinic, AltaMed continues to be a leading advocate and voice for the community. They’ve been able to withstand the test of time because they were built for their community, by their community.
