As a second-generation immigrant, Jacob grew up seeing the countless sacrifices his family made to build a better life. Because of them, he has always strived to reach greater heights.
His life took a pivotal turn when someone introduced him to the AltaMed Escalera program—a college and career readiness program that provides students with the resources to graduate, apply for college, and explore alternative career paths. Interactive panels and hands-on learning help students gain firsthand insight into various medical professions, especially helpful to students who lack access to professional mentors in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
While on a field trip with Escalera, Jacob discovered the UCLA-Turner Allied Health Internship, an opportunity that gave students the chance to rotate through various allied health careers. One field in particular—genetic counseling—caught his attention.
Noticing the absence of Latino representation in this profession, Jacob felt a calling to serve his community. He says, “Without support, we would not know these professions exist. I’m eternally grateful to the medical professionals who take the time to showcase a day in their lives.”
Determined to make a difference in health care, today, he is getting ready to attend the University of California, Davis to pursue his degree in genetics.
Jacob thrives as a skilled communicator and mentor. During one Escalera workshop, he spoke about his experience with the UCLA-Turner Allied Health Internship, inspiring several other students to apply.
With just a 10% acceptance rate, Jacob was determined to help his peers earn a spot in the internship program. He not only helped them build standout applications but also coached them in preparation for the final interview. Of the five students who applied, four were admitted and one was wait-listed. Jacob says, “It’s a happy feeling to see the dedication and devotion to my students truly pay off, giving them the same opportunity that led me to find my true passion.”
